TNT: Racers - Review: The Evolution of Kart Racing
1/9/2012 10:13:34 AM by Daniel Brown |

|
This fun racer launched on the PSN last week. After making its initial debut on XBox Live PC & Wii, the Playstation Network has been injected with the next kart racer to burn rubber in the gaming industry. So how does it measure up to all the other kart racers hitting the industry? Well, the road to victory may never be the same. Hitting the road with 18 different tracks & courses, players can race up to four of their friends both online and off. This largely over looked Kart racer has all the best elements that make up a great racing experience with friends. With some of the coolest power ups I’ve seen in a kart racer, and one of the most strategic gameplay designs, TNT: Racers should be played by lovers of all things fun, vehicular, and combative. With an art style reminisce of PSN exclusive Calling All Cars, players will enter the game taking a quick tutorial introducing them to the basic mechanics of the game; while giving them a brief look at some of the core strategy’s to winning and surviving the race. Unlike most kart racers, TNT: Racers requires you to be more than just the fast car on the track, or to be the one who knows the track the best. Because of the games isometric camera, players need to stay in the race by staying on screen. Once you’ve fallen out of the screen, you are out of the race. In most game types the victory will be award to the last man standing. To help you stay alive and make life harder for others are the games many weapons and power-ups. Equipping you with everything from the magnetic ray gun that can add an instance slow down to the one head, to a full blown missile launcher with lock on capabilities, the combat has a deep strategic blend of speed and tactics. Aimlessly shooting at the one in front of you is not always the best way to win. In many of the game's modes, points are the way a victor is determined. So you need to be methodical in your approach to winning a race. Slowing down the one whose ahead of you in points is the best way to win, and in the ghost mode which allows you to keep racing only to make the other racers life harder, this tactic is extremely beneficial and is one of the best ways to prevent someone from passing you in points. TNT: Racers takes the classic form of Kart racing and adds a level of strategy that makes this fun style of Kart racing fell new again. With enough modes to keep the single player racers happy, the multiplayer is where this journey behind the wheel shines. Unfortunately, so few people know about this digitally released game, that theirs no one to play with online. So you need to enjoy this multiplayer locally.
Also dampening the experience is the lack of variation in the feel of the cars. As you rank higher and unlock more cars, a number of cool looking speed machines will become available to you. However, with all the new exotic looks comes a lack of diversity in the handling of the vehicles, making every car feel almost the same. Overall TNT: Racers is one of the best Kart racers to hit the PSN, and one of few to have perfectly balanced the concept of strategic combat racing. With its colorful hues and varied track designs, fans looking for an evolved form of the Mario Kart style of racing should feel right at home with TNT: Racers.
