Aliens Colonial Marines: An Invasion Worth Experiencing
6/29/2011 12:24:42 PM by Matt Zakos

Get ready to drop, marine. Gearbox Software and Sega are taking you back to one of the most iconic Sci Fi worlds in Aliens: Colonial Marines.Keep an eye on your motion trackers as we take a look into this FPS coming soon to all three consoles. The team at Gearbox were kind enough to give us a live code demonstration this year at E3.

Housed in a replica bunker and guarded by pseudo-heavily armed marines, they went all out to show off what the new game can do. While Colonial Marines has bounced around a few times among different developers and publishers, it seems to have finally found the home it deserves with Gearbox and Sega.

The first thing you notice as the title screen boots up is that the ambiance matches the movies perfectly. As well it should. Gearbox teamed up with Fox Interactive to make this, even going so far as to talk to Ridley Scott, creator of the original movies. The marines and their gear, even the levels you move through all take their inspiration from the first two movies, if not being directly ported in to the game.

Set immediately following the second movie, the first level even involves returning to the command center where the team from Aliens made their final stand before fleeing to the drop ship. Graphically, the game is stunning, with new lighting systems that were custom made for this project from the ground up. That's right, no other game has the same lighting system, which sets an eerie atmosphere that matches the tradition we've all grown to love.

There isn't a HUD in this game. No health bar, no ammo counter, no radar. Attempting to stay true to the movies, if you want to check your ammo, you have to look at the LED counter on the side of the rifle. If you have a shotgun, better count the shells. SImilarly, you do not have an on screen radar.

The player does carry a motion tracker, which is large and awkward to carry. To view it, the player has to shift his gun out of the way, lifting the tracker to where he can view it. Similar to the movies, the tracker only detects motion on a two-dimensional plane. It's impossible to tell if your enemies are coming from above or below...or if they're coming out of the walls.

Which they do. The AI in Colonial Marines is impressive, to say the least. The Xenomorphs creep along until the right moment to pounce, leaping from around obstacles and intelligently hunting the player. They crawl along ceilings and walls, dart from side to side, and lunge to tackle the player. There is a close combat system involved, and if an Alien gets a hold of you, you can shake him off, though it was not shown how. Obviously, there were no displayed quicktime events to break the immersion.

There were, however, impressive ambushes by the AI. Hard to tell if it was scripted or not, but it was still a surprise when one Alien burst from a grate in the wall, snatching a fellow marine and dragging him into the darkness before we could realize what had happened.

Game play is tight and fast. Several scenes took place in narrow, dark corridors, with only a slight shine of the slimy exoskeleton and their hissing kreen to let us know the Aliens were on their way. Even setting up sentry guns didn't seem to help much, as the above stated ambushes from vents and grates became more and more common. In a situation like this, it's always good to have another gun at your side, right?

That's why Colonial Marines features drop in, drop out co-op. No load screens, no moving back to the title. At anytime, a second player can power up a controller and join the fight for survival without inhibiting the first player's game at all. When they're done, they can drop out, and the first player can continue on as if the second player had never shown up.

With such an suspenseful atmosphere, excellent graphics and impressive staff, Aliens: Colonial Marines looks to be setting up to be an amazing game. There are plans to release it on the Xbox 360, PS3, and even prototyped for possible release on the Wii U. No confirmed release date yet, but here's to hoping it makes it early next year. And remember, when in doubt, nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
