BattleField 3: Is Dice Hiding The Visual Truth Behind Touched Up Trailers
7/12/2011 10:53:44 AM by Robert MacNeroy

Featuring one of the longest lines at E3 2011 was EA’s hit shooter, Battlefield 3. The game looks like it can make the Battlefield run green with money come this holiday seasons. While at E3, something seemed odd about EA’s media presentation of Battlefield 3. After seating us in a small room, Dice made our dog tags, and we were greeted by a screen shot presentation while one of the developers explained what they have shown so far. The odd thing is that they never showed the videos of the gameplay they were talking about. In fact, no gameplay videos were shown during the presentation. Throughout the entire event, Dice only showed screen shots in an almost power point like presentation.

I couldn’t help but ponder why  wouldn’t they show the amazing gameplay videos just before we were about to go hands on. Dice's lead designer made sure he referenced how good the videos looked during his presentation, but didn't show them. Showing the gameplay we all love watching over and over, seems like the perfect build up to what we all were expectation to be an epic play through. After playing the game, one thing is very true, the graphics are amazing, but they are not as eye catching as the gameplay videos are. Again, Battlefield 3 look amazing, but not as amazing as EA would have you believe. The biggest differences is the level of photo-realism. What we've seen in the single player gameplay trailers is not what we played during our time with the game. It seems almost to good to be true when we all saw the original gameplay trailers, and after playing the game that just might be true. It’s a known fact that multiplayer is typically less pretty than single player for technical reasons, but this just wasn’t close to what were being sold in the videos, the slight multiplayer differences would not apply here.

The color depth and textures didn’t seem to have the same quality seen in the trailers. All is not lost in Battlefield 3, the animation quality is beyond any other shooter on the market. Was EA hiding something, are the videos we have seen just polished feeds of gameplay, or is the hardware the games running on different then what we played at the event. It’s no doubt that Battlefield 3 looks great, and the recent PS3 gameplay looks almost on par with the videos of the PC's gameplay. My gameplay experience with Battlefield 3 on PC didn’t quite reach those levels of graphic fidelity. even on jimmy fallen the PS3 demo of the game was epic, but that's not whats being played by members of the press. It almost seem like Dice wanted to show us some screens of the game so we wouldn’t notice the differences once we got our hands on it.

Once I did play it, I wasn’t as blown away as expected I'd be. Battlefield 3 is sure to be an amazing shooting experience, whether it’s the hardware, software, or the difference between single player and multiplayer making the visual difference, is still unknown, but something is surely different than what EA is showing and what the press is playing.

It’s important to note that the gameplay is nothing less than stellar, destruction, gunplay, and even controls are prefect and live up to many of Frostebite 2.0's claims. Let’s hope the graphics live up to the hype as well once the games released. As of now, Battlefield has the best graphics around, and most PC games shine a similar light, but even still, these graphics are not quite what is being shown to the public. All hope is not lost for the best looking game around, it’s still possible that the single player campaign is going to be the standout visually, currently, my experience with the game has me somewhat skeptical about the multiplayer components abilities to meet those same levels.
