A number of games got revealed last year. Some are sequels to big name IP’s, while others are total new experiences we are all waiting to enjoy. Here are the top games revealed over the past year.
Overstrike - In a year filled with unexpected events, Insomniac’s departure from the exclusive agreement they’ve had with Sony for years was something no one saw coming. After having a storied reputation for making hit Playstation exclusives like Ratchet & Clank, and now Resistance: Fall of Man, the announcement revealing that they would be going multiplatform, was almost hurtful to PlayStation loyalist. Some say the move affected the sales of Resistance 3, but it’s hard to prove if that's true or not. However, their first multiplatform title, Overstrike, did have its reveal trailer launch earlier this year. It revealed a number of clues on what gamers can expect from the new action shooter. The best clue being that Insomniac’s flare for creative weapons and interesting characters will continue as they journey to multiplatform development. It's going to be exciting to see where Insomniac takes us now that they have a bit more freedom.
Grand Theft Auto V - The biggest franchise in gaming recently dropped its reveal trailer, which, is made entirely from actual gameplay. As internet speculation hit an all-time high, the rumors and news started coming from every direction. Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most anticipated games expected to launch next year, and its release will likely be the biggest in gaming. While RockStar has remained tight lipid regarding the games details, some hints are still lingering in the shadows of its reveal trailer. You can enjoy a few more details on the game in our latest issue of GameHeadz the Digital Magazine.
The Last of Us - It’s expected that Naughty Dog’s first attempt at horror will be as good as the many games they made over the years. If the reveal trailer is any indication, those expectations aren’t too farfetched. The Last of Us is promising to bring a fresh new take on horror, but how the Uncharted developer plans to do that is still a mystery. Naughty Dog has promised that the game is nothing like anything we’ve ever seen before. With all the zombie games and horror filled shooters that make up the genre already, we aren’t sure what to expect from an original take on being scared by a game. For now, our expectations are very high for what this new game has to offer.
Max Payne 3 – Still fully equipped with every good thing that comes through the use of BulletTime, we get the third sequel in the Max Payne Universe. The initial reveal of Max Payne 3 brought up a number of questions and concerns from fans of the series. The biggest being Max’s new look. Now that more news and more gameplay, has been shown, Max is looking better than ever. This is looking like a big release for 2012 already, and as more gets revealed, I think it's safe to say things are only going to get better.
Halo 4 –Though some may find the announcement of Halo 4 to be a sign that Microsoft is milking the series more than they should. The news that has been reveal on the game so far, shows a new direction for this version of Halo; with the part of the game that has struggle over the past few installments getting the most attention, the story. More variety, more flexibility, and an entirely new enemy has ranked among the top new features coming to the game. Because Halo 4 is being developer by 343 Industries, this could be the first sequel in the franchise to offer a fresh single player experience, and could add new life into the franchise.
Dragons Dogma – One of the surprises hits of E3 2011, This game showed that an RPG can be more than just a level grind session with pretty characters, and over complicated combat calculations. Dragons Dogma’s real time action is further complimented by the games original take on multiplayer through the use of the Pawn System. The cinematic cut scenes, and the interesting world known to most RPG’s returns here. If you haven’t heard much about Dragons Dogma, you can get a few more details in our coverage right here. This one game that should be on you radar for games to play in 2012.
Tomb Raider -A franchise once considered past its prime received a reboot this year. Though most were concern that it would end up being more of the same, what SquareEnix & Crystal Dynamics presented was a sequel that showed a different side of Lara Croft. A younger more vulnerable and more interesting Lara Croft returns, and is set in a beautiful new world. The gameplay walk-through we experienced at E3 2011, left us with a longing desire for more. It’s clear Tomb Raider is back, and fans should be excited about her return.
