Sony’s first attempt at a console based MMO didn’t receive the mass adaptation when it was launched earlier this year. As DC Universe Online fought hard to survive, some issues plaguing the gameplay prompted complaints from gamers and a number of post launch patches. The biggest change to DC Universe Online is SOE's switch to the free-to-play platform. Now that DC Universe’s gameplay has been polished and perfected, the free-to-play launch is underway. And according to the numbers it’s already a success.

With over 330 thousands new players in just three days, DC Universe Online’s concurrent server usage is up 600%. This was confirmed via a tweet from John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment. Apparently the servers weren’t ready for such a heavy load to hit so quickly, as both the PC and the PS3 servers crashed today, expectedly. Restarting the service was no easy task either, and currently the cause is still unknown. Even after the servers were back online if you attempted to login, you would need to sit in a queue of over 3000 people. It seems the decision to go free to play was a risk worth taking. If the mass adoption continues we could have the first successfully console MMO on our hands.

Though DC Universe has gone free-to-play, Sony Online Entertainment did confirm that they still have no plans to do cross platform play between PS3 and PC. On a positive note, they also confirmed that anyone who purchased the game prior to the free-to-play switch would be automatically upgraded to premium account. The servers are back online, but the queue is still pretty hefty, so, expect a wait as you attempt to save the world.
