The Best Game Trailers Released in 2011
12/31/2011 1:22:29 PM by Daniel Brown

In 2011 we saw many amazing videos and trailers for games releasing this year. We were also privileged to see trailers for some games that have yet to have an official release date assigned to them. As the year comes to a close, here are the best of the many gaming related videos & gameplay trailers that hit the media in 2011.

DC Universe Online -

The first MMO expected to succeed on consoles, was launched to some hefty expectations. Once the game hit the market, the sales of DC Universe Online were pretty decent. Now a Free-To-Play MMO, the war online is more populated than ever. However, what really caught the eyes of hero fans the first time was the games cinematic trailer titled ‘Who Do You Trust’.  Filled with some of DC’s best heroes and villains, this trailer is one that could easy be the prelude to a DC Universe animated movie. As awesome as it would be to see a DC movie done in animation this epic, I wouldn’t recommend holding your breath until they make it happen. However, you can always enjoy the superhero action below over and over again.

Assassin Creed: Revelations -

With plans to take the series in a completely new direction, Ubisoft unveiled the first details on Ezio’s final quest back in the summer. It brought news of an adventure they would explore the past of not just Ezio but also the series’ original hero, Altair. The many details hinted at in the trailer have all been uncovered if you’ve were lucky enough to get the game as a gift for Christmas, or played it at release. As great as the game is, one of it’s coolest moments was definitely when the Assassin's Creed Revelations - Emerald Dawn Extended Trailer was released.

Dead Island -

With one of the best announcements of a new iP the industry has ever seen, Deep silver launched this horror adventure with a bloody bang. Though the game was met with mixed reviews when it launched, one of the highest points in the game would have to be the trailer that introduced it to the world. It’s also one of the most emotional and creative trailers to ever grace the world of gaming, and one of the few game trailers to win as many awards as most major games.

Diablo III: Black-Soulstone Cinematic -

The third game in this classic series has much to offer fans of the dungeon crawling Isometric adventure. One of its best offerings got its reveal in the Black Soulstone trailer, which dropped a few hints at some of Diablo III’s darkest secrets. But what the trailer does best is look awesome, and inject you with a new found inspiration to explore the world Diablo III to see what the long awaited game has to offer.

StarWars the Old Republic -

If there is a series that has had its fair share of media attention, it’s the Star Wars saga. A franchise that has gone far beyond the movies that launched the now cult like addiction to anything featuring a light saber and mysterious figures in hooded cloaks, has now become a staple platform for games. Star Wars and gaming have had a love hate relationship for years. In recent times that dynamic has changed; mostly for the better. However, with Star Wars The Old Republic gaming among the Jedi’s has become a bit more appealing, if you’re a fan of MMO’s. With the current Star Wars game winning over those looking to rule the galaxy, much of its attractiveness was generated from its E3 2011 reveal trailer. It has all the fixings necessary to create an authentic Star Wars experience. Being littered with Light Sabers, hooded cloaks, and some very cool villains, coupled with some awesome action, makes this one of the best trailers to release this year.

Need for Speed the Run -

EA’s handling of the Need for speed franchise has raised some question about the publisher’s plans for the series. Now on what looks like an annual release schedule, fans of racing have had a number of complaints about the evolution of racing games coming from EA. With Need for Speed the Run, a solid racing engine and some interesting gameplay mechanics showed that EA is looking to push the limits of what’s possible with a racing game, but what may have sparked the attention of race fans could have been this trailer from the man who’s amazing at making things look awesome, Micheal Bay. This promotional trailer put together by the director of the Transforms movies had me itching for an action filled racing experience.

Hitman Absolution -

When SquareEnix announced that the stealth Assassin series was coming back, the reveal trailer lift little clues for players to pull details from, but when the we saw the gameplay for the game at E3 2011, it was clear that Agent 47 was retuning with all the elements that made him the best, along with some new features that brings him into the current generation of gaming with a bang. What made its gameplay reveal so awesome was the many cool references and creative touches added to the gameplay. The well place sound and the cinematic moments all point to an immersive experience for players to enjoy when the game finally releases.

Last Of Us -

No one would have ever guessed that a horror game would emerge from a Naughty Dog studio. With Naughty Dog being a developer know for creating fun gaming experiences like Crash Bandicoot, and now the Uncharted series, to image them making a horror adventure was something no one would have ever thought possible. Until the VGA reveal of ‘Last Of US’ took place, a trailer that showed signs that the new horror game would building on the developers reputation for making high quality games. What was the most impressive about the game was how it reveals a number of hidden gameplay elements and story details that the final game will feature; most of which have yet to be revealed, so watching the trailer again could prove useful for those looking to pull out a few more details.

Battlefield 3 -

One of the greatest graphical evolutions this generation took place with the initial reveal of EA’s destruction filled shooter, Battlefield 3. Though the gameplay shown was running on a PC, it was, and still is one of the biggest jumps in gaming this generation. Once Battlefield 3 hit consoles, the graphical fidelity didn’t quite match those found in the PC version, but it's still the best seen in any shooter released on console's this year. With EA's new engine, Frostbite 2.0, the PS3's true potential may have been revealed, as the game looks pretty amazing on Sony's console when compared to other console versions of the game.
